Following our practice of bringing to Pentamere events new to the area (or SCA like It Takes My Child To Raze A Village,) we invite you to Medieval Threads! As many of our members are active in the fibre arts/textiles with making decorated veils and garb for events (or as an award scroll see Baron Óláfr Ígulbjarnarson's apron,) we are looking for those willing to teach us to make better/prettier medieval garments for our events (even if it is just your basic t-tunic.)
We are also looking for fellow students to join us in learning more about the fibre arts and textiles from the Medieval period. Advanced or beginner - All are welcome!

3+ hour classes where the student will have time to work on a project under the tutelage of the instructor.

Card Weaving for Absolute Beginners

Description of Class: Learn the ins and outs of basic tablet weaving. This class is designed for complete beginners who want to learn the basics of using weaving cards.

Beginning Silk Banner Making

Description of Class: Learn some history and make a small silk banner
Length of Class: 3 - 4 hours with a lunch break for drying time

Basket Weaving 101

Description of Class: Learn the basics of basket weaving by making a small market basket.
Length of Class: 3 Hour

Beginning Bobbin Lace

Description of Class: Students will learn basic bobbin lace stitching techniques
and take either a bracelet or a bookmark.
Length of Class: 3 Hours

Hand Sewing 101

Description of Class: A hands-on class covering 3 basic stitches- running stitch, back stitch, and whip/felling stitch-, then use them to sew a flat felled seam. We'll also talk about why you would want to hand sew garb or bother with finishing seams at all, along with tips to avoid some common frustrations.

The Decorated Edge

Description of Class: This is a compact version of Decorated Veils. Create a sampler cup cover and learn several beading, knotted, and other edge embellishments.
Length of Class: 1 Hour

Embroidery in the Current Middle Ages

Description of Class: This is not a class on how to make embroidery patterns in a period manner, but how to use our tools in the Current Middle Ages to quickly make patterns that will stick to your project and that are easily removed with cold water! Learn how to size and shape embroidery patterns on a PC computer, using PowerPoint or free alternatives to PowerPoint, and what to do with the printer afterward.

Gordian Not

Description of Class: Introduction to basic knots used in decorative functional knot work (macrame), for the construction of lanyards. In this case, the lanyards are targeted for use in single weapon retention by SCA heavy fighters.

Description of Class: Learn double running stitch and pattern reading.

German Renaissance Smocked Apron

Description of Class: Learn the basics of marking, pleating, and smocking a Trossfrau (Landschneckt) apron
Length of Class: 1 Hour

Intarsia 101

Description of Class: Intarsia is cutting and sewing designs together and creating a negative/positive image with wool fabric, then decorating the seam with threads or leather.
Length of Class: 1 Hour
